Engineering Services for the Completion of the New Montecchio Maggiore Bus Station and of the Connections With the Road Network

 The current toll station on the A4 Motorway in Montecchio Maggiore is located on an important motorway junction that connects the primary road system to the regional and provincial mobility system, but which presents some important criticalities that have over time highlighted its shortcomings and the need for a new solution.  

The area's infrastructural framework is very complex and features the A4 motorway (the most important and busiest road system in the Northeast), which with an East-West direction crosses the entire Po Valley from Trieste to Turin, and ordinary roads such as Regional Road no. 11 (former SS 11) and Provincial Road no. 500 (former SS 500). These cross densely urbanised built-up areas, generates high traffic, and consequent high atmospheric and acoustic impact, intolerable for local communities. In this context, the Pedemontana Veneta - S.P.V. superhighway (currently under construction) requires a direct interconnection with the A4 motorway, overcoming the location of the current toll station. The section of motorway to be moved is approximately 2.019 km long, designed at 140 km/h design speed, with the placement of more than 8 km of safety barriers. For the interchange ramps and junctions with the road system, the total length is 4.12 km.

 

The new intervention envisages the construction of the new tollgate on the A4 Motorway, which is integrated with the direct interconnection with the SPV and the new High-Speed Line currently being designed. The following objectives can thus be achieved:

  • to build a new toll station to interconnect the motorway system with the road network, in a different position from the current one and compatible with the Superstrada Pedemontana Veneta
  • create a motorway-type interconnection between the A4 and the Pedemontana Veneta motorway;
  • relieving the existing roads and intersections for the benefit of local communities; 
  • build a new maintenance centre at the current location of the Montecchio Maggiore toll station.

The project solution envisages the diversion of the motorway southwards, for a section of approximately 2,000 m, with a maximum transversal shift of the carriageways of approximately 30 m, and the construction of new structures to cross the railway line and for the construction of junction works.

The V01 viaduct is 188m long, with span lengths of approximately 45m, 35m, 70m, 38m and the largest span is the motorway overpass. The piers have a maximum height of about 13 m, with foundations on 26.50 m long piles. The project also includes the toll house and new maintenance centre buildings, designed considering the new energy saving regulations. The covering of the tolling areas is planned with three-dimensional steel structures that required special structural modelling.

 

The project also includes the toll gate and the new maintenance centre buildings, which are designed considering the new energy saving regulations. The works are carried out while maintaining the operation of the motorway and the railway. Therefore, special attention is paid to the work phases in order to minimise interference with motorway and railway traffic according to the requirements of Autostrada Brescia Verona Vicenza Padova S.p.A. and the railway network manager RFI.
